Addis Ababa
The “New Flower” is set at the foot of the Entoto Mountain at an altitude of 3000 metres above sea level. Emperor Menelik II, who had moved his capital city from Ankober, founded Addis Ababa in 1880 at the suggestion of his wife Taitu - who had sampled the advantages of the natural hot spring "filwoha" and discovered the beauty of the surroundings - and chose the city as a capital. Covering 250 square kilometres, the city rambles across many wooded hillside and gullies which are traversed by fast flowing streams. Addis Ababa is the 3rd highest capital in the world, which means it enjoys the afro-montane climate. Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa as well as the capital city of Ethiopia, was chosen to be the headquarters of the United Nation Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and was also named as the headquarters of OAU (currently AU – African Unity) in 1963. Addis Ababa, the mountain city, hosts more than 70 embassies, consular representatives and many Non-Governmental Organisations.

Piazza
The city centre of Addis Ababa and the second main shopping area provides a relatively calm environment, and in many cases better quality goods than Merkato. Piazza is also a jewellery centre of the city. You can find gold, silver, nickel, and brass of both domestic and foreign origin.

Merkato
The largest open market in East Africa! One can find a vast selection of grains, spices, cloths, ironware, pots etc. As local peoples say.

“Merkato is a place to find whatsoever apart from the human soul, then to bargain”

Churchill Avenue
A little distance from the Piazza. A wide variety of shops specialising in Ethiopian handicraft and other interesting tourist souvenirs. Especially smaller shops near to the main post office have got a variety of souvenirs from traditional to modern ones.

Entoto Mountain
The Entoto Mountain offers a panoramic view of Addis Ababa. On clear days you can easily see all Addis Ababa from the top of the mountain. You will visit the old palace of Emperor Menelik II and the old Saint Mary church and its museum inside of which the crown of the Emperor is kept.

Addis Ababa Museum
Back of Meskel Square. We find a collection of photos and portraits, reporting on the" political, historic and architectural history" of the city.
