The
country's earliest high civilization where Ethiopian the historic
route takes its beginning, lies several hours’ drive from
the more accessible city of Axum.
It
is close to a much more recent Christian church that you may see
the towering ruin of Yeha's temple of the moon-built more than
2500 years ago, in Sabean times.
The
temple is an imposing rectangular edifice. Though it has long
since lost its roof and upper stories the ruins stand some 12
metres in height.
According
to local stories the temple was built by the 6th century B.C but
so far archaeologist have found no convincing proof.
